Mayor Thomas M. Menino and 14 Mayors from across Massachusetts today released a PSA encouraging citizens to demand Congress take immediate action to prevent gun violence. The Mayors are members of the national Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition that now includes more than 900 mayors from 45 states and more than 1.4 million grassroots supporters. The PSA can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8x2TuJ1lD8. Local access channels of the participating Mayors have been provided with the ad, as well as Comcast, Charter, RCN cable companies and local broadcast media.

“Mayors are at the forefront in the battle against gun violence – that’s why so many have joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino said. “It is clear that we have an overwhelming amount of support for background checks and other common sense reforms. That’s why we’re demanding that Congress take action to help us protect our communities and children.”

About Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Since its inception in April 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 mayors to more than 900 mayors from across the country. We have more than one million grassroots supporters, making us the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country. The bipartisan coalition, co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, has united the nation’s mayors around these common goals: protecting their communities by holding gun offenders and irresponsible gun dealers accountable; demanding access to trace data that is critical to law enforcement efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking; and working with legislators to fix gaps, weaknesses and loopholes in the law that make it far too easy for criminals and other prohibited purchasers to get guns.
