Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced the donation of 3,000 new coats to Boston children ages 2 to 14. The announcement was made at Boston Centers for Youth & Families’ Tobin Community Center in Mission Hill, with the distribution of coats at two locations immediately following.
“As winter approaches, many Boston families will struggle to buy warm coats for their children,” Mayor Menino said. “Because of this partnership, thousands of low-income children will be ready for winter. This cause is so important for the health and success of our kids, and we’re thrilled to be working with Operation Warm and the Boston Foundation for a second year.”
Half of the coats were given to children in Boston Housing Authority Section 8 families and the other half were donated to children through Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) community centers across the city. Both agencies distributed the coats along with volunteers immediately following the announcement. The BHA distributed their coats at the Roxbury Boys and Girls Club. The Section 8 children were randomly selected according to the children’s ages and family income, while the BCYF children were selected by community center staff from all 35 BCYF facilities.
“Operation Warm has been working with the Boston Foundation, Mayor Menino’s office and the BHA for two years and is so grateful to the City of Boston for helping establish a foothold for this program in order to provide new winter coats to Boston’s most vulnerable population; children in poverty,” said Carey Palmquist, Executive Director of Operation Warm.
The donation was made possible through a partnership with the Boston Foundation, Operation Warm and Genzyme, a Sanofi company.
“The Boston Foundation is pleased to be able to contribute again to this partnership,” said Paul S. Grogan, President and CEO of the Boston Foundation. “We know from experience that when we address children’s basic needs, we make it that much more likely they can succeed in school and beyond.”
Operation Warm is a national nonprofit based in Pennsylvania and was established in 1998 to produce and distribute new winter coats to children in need living in the United States; alleviating a major financial burden for parents who struggle to pay for basic necessities. Operation Warm raises money to distribute the coats with support from local community partners including civic organizations, businesses, foundations and other philanthropic organizations. Last winter, Operation Warm and the Boston Foundation donated 5000 coats to the BHA for children in public housing.
“We are happy to collaborate with Operation Warm, the Boston Foundation and Genzyme to provide coats to our neediest children,” said William McGonagle, BHA Administrator. “The BHA is always looking for resources to aid both our public housing and Section 8 residents.”
“We are so thankful for this donation of coats which will help take a little pressure off our families as they stretch their budgets to make it through the winter,” said Daphne Griffin, Boston’s Chief of Human Services and Executive Director of BCYF.
