Mayor's Priorities
Mayor Menino is constantly striving to make Boston a better place to live, work and visit. In the fall of 2005, the Mayor called upon his Cabinet to join him in creating a new and powerful agenda for his fourth term administration. Together, Mayor Menino and his Cabinet identified eight chief goals addressing the city's fundamental needs, issues of equality, and economic vitality. Interagency teams have collaborated with experts in the public and private sectors to craft a shared plan for success in these eight areas:

Closing the Achievement Gap
Mayor Menino believes that the gap in academic achievement between White and Asian students and Black and Hispanic students is unacceptable. He is committed to giving all students the tools and support they need to reach their full potential.

Reducing Violent Crime
Every resident deserves to live in a safe neighborhood without fear of violence. Mayor Menino meets weekly with his Strategic Crime Council to implement and expand his comprehensive strategy to reduce violent crime in Boston.

Increasing Workforce Housing
Mayor Menino is committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing for working families in Boston. Working with corporate and non-profit partners, the City has developed initiatives aimed at helping first-time homebuyers, as well as educating homeowners about the dangers of predatory lending and foreclosure prevention.

Improving City Services
Ensuring excellent customer service across all departments is a top priority for the Mayor. The City is constantly looking at ways to utilize new technology and service delivery methods to improve city services at the same or lower cost.

Creating New Jobs
Expanded partnerships and intensive marketing outreach will attract new businesses to the Boston area and expand existing ones.

Narrowing Health Disparities
Mayor Menino believes that racial and ethnic disparities in health care are unacceptable. The City is in the process of implementing the recommendations of the Mayor's Task Force to Eliminate Ethnic and Racial Health Disparities, and has already coordinated more than $1 million in grants to dozens of local health organizations.

Increasing Diversity in Government
Believing that City government should reflect the people of Boston, Mayor Menino is committed to recruiting, hiring, and training a diverse city workforce and creating a culturally welcoming environment.

Growing Revenue
The City's overall success depends on a solid financial foundation that is not overly dependent on a single source of revenue. In order to strengthen that foundation, the Mayor is actively engaged in pursuing new revenues streams to support Boston's growth and vitality through revenue diversification.
