Tips
Visit the Spring Brook Farm stand and other great vendors at the
Peabody Square Farmers’ Market, 1943 Dorchester Ave., every Friday
from 3:00 - 7:00 PM, through October 30th
Rachel Kingsley of Spring Brook Farm in Littleton had these great tips
and information to share.
- Never put tomatoes in the fridge because they'll lose their
fresh-from-the-farm flavor and smell, and turn into mealy
factory-farmed tomatoes.
- A perfect heirloom tomato is rarely perfect in appearance, but is
exceptionally flavorful and comes in a variety of colors and shapes,
such as the Peach Tomato whose fuzzy yellow skin sets it apart from
normal grocery store tomatoes.
- Quality corn can be eaten raw; it is crispy and tastes sweet and
almost milky, and is a favorite snack among farm workers.
- The warmer a strawberry is, the sweeter it tastes, so help it
develop more sugars by letting it sit in the sun for a few minutes
before enjoying.
- Local unprocessed honey can cure outdoor allergies because bees
collect and convert the same irritating pollen into a sweet treat that
boosts your immunity to local allergens.
Sue from Gary's Too Farmstand in Townsend, MA says, “Fresh fruits and vegetables are higher in vitamins and minerals than their frozen counterparts, which are often preserved with salt and sugars. Try these healthy tips:”
- Fresh fruits are ideal for making jellies, jams, shakes, and juices.
- Fresh herbs like ‘stevia’ can be used as natural sugar free sweeteners.
- Dried herbs like ‘chamomile’ and ‘mint’ are ideal for making homemade teas.
- Use a slice of tomato or fresh homemade pesto on sandwich instead of condiments, which are filled with salt, sugar, and preservatives.
- Add parsley to a cup of orange juice for a morning boost that is high in calcium and iron.
You can find Gary’s Too Farmstand and MacArthur Farms at the Mission Hill Farmers Market every Thursday from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., now through October 29th.
