Tax Title Division
Law Department Tax Title personnel assist with the City's collection of property taxes by enforcing tax titles in Massachusetts Land Court. A tax title is a lien in which the City takes legal ownership of property because of unpaid property taxes and allows the owner the right to redeem the property by paying the delinquent tax balance. Personnel working in the City of Boston Taxpayer Referral and Assistance Center (TRAC), telephone, 617-635-4287, can provide more information on the the collection of property taxes. You may also reach the TRAC by going to Law Department Related Links.
Property Owner's Guide to Tax Title
This guide is provided as a courtesy to help explain the tax title process. State law governs tax title procedures for cities and towns, including Boston. A tax title is a lien placed on property to enforce the collection of property taxes. The lien is removed when the property tax account is paid in full. If the property taxes are not paid, the City may foreclose and take possession of the property. Please understand that City of Boston Law Department personnel are prohibited from giving legal advice to taxpayers.
