Boston Public Schools Office of the Legal Advisor

Alissa Ocasio, Legal Advisor

The Office of Legal Advisor (“OLA”) to the Boston Public Schools is a division of the City of Boston Law Department.

OLA functions as in-house counsel providing representation and advice to the School Committee, Superintendent, administrators and principals/headmasters acting in their capacity on behalf of the Boston Public Schools. Attorneys provide support to the City and District in a variety of ways. In litigation matters we provide representation in federal, state and administrative courts handling matters in the following areas:

  • Personal Injury and other torts;
  • Employment discrimination;
  • Contract disputes;
  • Special education litigation, and
  • Student discipline appeals.

Attorneys also provide guidance to BPS on a variety of matters involving school and education law. In addition, we handle all public and student records requests and advise the school district on a myriad of areas impacting government entities including procurement, open meeting laws, land use, and state conflict of interest laws.
