Claims Division
Law Department claims personnel adjudicate claims filed against the City. Claims filed against the City fall into two general categories, road and sidewalk defect claims, under Mass. G. L. c. 84, and tort type claims, such as motor vehicle accidents, under Mass. G. L. c. 258.

Law Department employees represent the interests of the City and are unable to provide legal advice to claimants or potential claimants. Please note that Massachusetts law provides strict deadlines to file claims against municipalities, especially for road and defect claims. The law also provides deadlines for claimants to pursue litigation in a court of appropriate jurisdiction in the event the claim is not resolved.
