For six weeks each summer ReadBoston’s Storymobiles travel to summer programs throughout the city providing children with free books and captivating stories told by professional storytellers. During the summer of 2007 the Storymobile served 100 sites and 28,000 children. The goal of the program is to expose children to storytelling, a powerful literacy strategy, and to encourage programs to incorporate additional literacy activities, providing opportunities for learning when children are away from the classroom and can experience an academic slide.

Program Goals
  1. Emphasize the importance of reading and literacy activities during the summer months.
  2. Create an environment in which children can experience storytelling, a fun and engaging literacy strategy.
  3. Provide an opportunity for children to take home new, quality books.
Program Facts
  • In its 12 years the ReadBoston Storymobile has given over 175,000 books to children in Boston.
  • The program visited 100 sites in the summer of 2007.
  • The program was highlighted in the book The Good City by Emily Hiestand.
  • The Storymobiles have driven onto Fenway Park twice.

Application Process
The Storymobile program accepts sites through an RFP process. Applications will be available in February 2008. Site will be notified of selection in May 2008.
