Weights & Measures Division
Assistant Commissioner Bob McGrath
Please be advised that on January 1, 2011, device inspection fees will be
increased for the following devices:
The Weights & Measures Division enforces Massachusetts General Law (MGL) relating to
the inspection of commercial weighing and measuring devices. The devices inspected
for accuracy and correctness include taximeters, gasoline dispensers, home heating oil
truck meters and scales of all types. The Division also enforces various MGLs relating to
insufficent weight or measure, scanner price accuracy, unit pricing, item pricing, motor
fuel quality and pricing, delivery of home heating oil, method of sale and firewood deliveries.
Device inspections are required by MGL to be performed annually. If a device is found to be correct, an approval seal is affixed to the device along with metal security seals on the adjustable components. If a device is found to be incorrect, a rejection notice is affixed and device is not allowed to be used until reparied or replaced.
The Division responds to all complaints. Enforcement inspections, e.g. pricing, package weight, heating oil deliveries, are performed throughout the year and are generally random and unannounced. Violations may result in warnings, fines, or criminal complaints.Contact Information:
