The Community Sanitation Division, also known as Project Pride, handles all of the vacant lot complaints that are received by ISD and issues violations through the City's Clean It Or Lien It Program. This division also coordinates the boarding of buildings with the various divisions holding the authority to issue violations or condemnations. Project Pride operates under a grant from the Department of Neighborhood Development and utilizes work release crews from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department in order to ensure that the manual labor involved in the cleaning these lots is completed.
Environmental Sanitation is responsible for the City Rodent Control Division and issues violations based on the state sanitary code as it relates to trash and rats. In addition, the Environmental Sanitation Division issues Site Cleanliness Licenses for businesses and commercial properties that require a dumpster or bulk refuse.
The Code Enforcement Division is responsible for the enforcement of the laws and ordinances concerning trash storage and disposal. The Code Enforcement Police also enforce the City's newsbox ordinance, the Massachusetts General Law regarding illegal dumping and various ordinances and statutes concerning hawkers, peddlers and street vending in the city.
