Obtaining a Building Permit
When Must I Get an Inspection

Required Inspections are listed in the back of the Building Permit. Building, Plumbing, Gas and Electrical Inspectors conduct "rough" and "final" inspections of the work. The work must be inspected and the yellow permit card signed prior to closing in walls. It is the owner's responsibilty to ensure that the contractor(s) call the building, plumbing and electrical inspectors and arange a time for the inspection The work must also be inspected at the end of the job and the permit card signed by all applicable inspectors.

If you are building a new structure, site or foundation inspections must be secured. In order to arange for an inspection, call (617) 635-5306 and request to speak with the building inspector assigned to your ward. When you receive your Building Permit, you will also receive a handout listing inspector's names, phone numbers and the wards to which they are assigned.
