From the Ground Up - A Contractor's Guide
Garage Permit and/or Flammable License
- WHEN IS THIS PERMIT/LICENSE REQUIRED?
- This is required when the applicant intends on storing flammable liquids (MGL CH 148)
- This is required for all auto-related uses (i.e. storage of vehicles in a garage)
- WHAT THE APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT
- Applicant must submit the completed typed application to the Secretary on the Committee on Licenses. This office is at ISD 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston (fifth floor).
- Four copies of the certified plot plans (no more than one (1) year old). The plan must be drawn to scale and clearly indicate:
- Boundaries of the land to be licensed
- All other structures situated or to be situated hereon the use of which requires land to be licensed and the distance from boundary lines.
- Size of building or other structures and occupancy thereof.
- The materials that will be used to construct the building.
- Outlines of the abutting parcels of land with the name of the owners (may be obtained at Boston City Hall).
- Floor plans indicating the layout of the garage and any flammable storage cabinets, tanks, etc.
- The applicant must also advertise notice of the hearing in a local newspaper. The secretary of licensing will provide the applicant with the information on advertising.
- HEARING
- The Committee on Licensing is comprised of representatives from the Fire Department, Department of Inspectional Services, and the Transportation Department.
- The Secretary of the Committee on Licensing schedules monthly hearings in order to provide abutters with an opportunity to publicly respond. The hearings are held at the Department of Inpsectional Services, 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA.
- After the hearing, the Secretary of Licensing will mail an invoice to the applicant.
- The applicant will come to ISD, pay the applicable fee and the permit/license will be issued.
