Internship Opportunities

A City of Boston Internship provides students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program a rigorous learning experience, gaining valuable skills from a City Department. Opportunities for Internships are offered to students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a Boston area.

Interns will have the opportunity to not only gain valuable professional experience in municipal government but to provide useful contributions that will help the City to deliver a high level of service to neighborhoods and residents. Below you will find a list of available positions. Click on each title to view the detailed description of the position and any related application and contact information

Eligibility and Application:

  • Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled in a credited college or university. Graduate interns must be currently enrolled, or accepted in, a graduate program.

  • Internships are managed by supervisors in individual departments; there is no central internship application for on-going positions. Departments require applicants to apply to an individual posting.

  • Internship positions have on-going availability throughout the academic calendar and summer. Not all departments may offer internships, if you are interested in interning in a specific department that does not have a posting please email a detailed description of your interest to internships@cityofboston.gov

Spring Marketing Internship
Parks and Recreation
Intern will report to the Marketing Manager and Director of External Affairs. The Marketing Department has a clear understanding of what the student should gain from the internship experience and how it complements the formal academic process. The intern will be exposed to the core responsibilities necessary for a future position in the communications, marketing, and recreation/leisure science fields.

Summer Marketing Internship
Parks and Recreation
Intern will report to the Marketing Manager and Director of External Affairs. The Marketing Department has a clear understanding of what the student should gain from the internship experience and how it complements the formal academic process. The intern will be exposed to the core responsibilities necessary for a future position in the communications, marketing, and recreation/leisure science fields. This marketing internship will provide broad exposure to all facets of public relations in a busy city government department including media and community relations, inter-governmental affairs, marketing, special events, and client relations.

Summer ParkARTS Internship
Parks and Recreation
Intern will report to the Marketing Manager and Director of Programming. The Marketing Department has a clear understanding of what the student should gain from the internship experience and how it complements the formal academic process. The intern will be exposed to the core responsibilities necessary for a future position in the arts education and/or parks & recreation fields. The Department will assist with the preparation of resume and writing samples. This internship will provide broad exposure to all facets of teaching children and adult arts workshops for a busy city government department, including arts education and curriculum design, media and community relations, marketing, and corporate sponsorships.
