Up to four year-long Fellowships are offered annually in the following areas: Technology, Public Health, Public Safety, and Performance Management.

The Boston Urban Mechanics Fellows will have three major responsibilities throughout the fellowship year. The Fellows will:

1. Provide subject-area expertise and advice to Mayor Menino, cabinet officials, department heads, and senior staff;
2. Participate in policy development and implementation through departments, as well as initiate and/or lead specific policy proposals and projects; and
3. Operate as an internal consultant directly advising one or more departments on organizational development, change or growth plans, and initiatives of particular interest to Mayor Menino.

In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Fellow will gain a deep understanding of the City's priorities and key operational challenges. The Fellow will work with city departments to identify opportunities for new projects and public/private partnerships in line with the Mayor's priorities. The Fellow may represent the Mayor and the City on inter-agency and citywide committees and working groups, as well as at public events and meetings.

The position requires deep subject-area knowledge and the ability to work independently and in teams. The Fellow should exhibit a broad interest in local, state, and national government operations and politics, as well as some familiarity with policy concerns and issues facing Boston and the local economy. The Fellow should also have some understanding of large and complex organizations, and excellent communication and presentation skills.

The Fellow must live in the City of Boston throughout the term of the fellowship, in accordance with the City's Residency Requirement for all municipal employees.

The Fellowship salary is $50,000 plus benefits.
