The Personnel Division (Human Resources) is divided into the following sections:

The division is the liaison with various departments: The Department of Personnel Administration; Civil Service Commission; Boston Fire Fighters Local 718, IAFF; the Law Department and other departments, agencies and local unions throughout the country.
Under the direction of a Deputy Fire Chief, the division is in charge of maintaining a complete personnel file of official records of every member throughout their careers.
A myriad of responsibilities fall under this division beginning with the selection of candidates for fire service; coordinating all phases of the interviewing; background investigation; physical agility testing; and medical clearance for all prospective fire fighter candidates. The division also works closely with the Department's Medical Staff in monitoring the progress and treatment of all departmental members.
Candidates for promotion have their experience and education validated by the Personnel Division as well as with the Massachusetts Human Resource Division. Newly promoted officers (Pool Officers ) and Acting Officers are assigned to vacancies in the field in order to maintain sufficient, operating strength of Division 1 and Division 2.
The Personnel Division also reviews and investigates cases of charges, grievances, disciplinary hearings, appeals and court cases.
Under the Personnel Division, the Department now has in place a team of specially trained Facilitators/Mediators to informally handle any disputes that may arise. The team has been used several times with great success. In addition, the Department also has a nationally recognized Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which is available to all members and their families in addressing problems in the areas of stress, substance abuse, marital, legal, and a host of other personal matters.
