Online Excise Tax Payment FAQs

If you have questions about your online payment transaction, please review the following F.A.Q.'s and User Tips before contacting TRAC or the ExciseOnline Support.

F.A.Q.s
Are debit cards accepted by the online Excise Tax Payment system?
Debit cards are accepted as long as PIN number or address verification are not required. Please use only Mastercard or Visa (credit or debit) cards to conduct your transactions.

I've just attempted a payment and did not receive an on-screen confirmation number. Did my payment go through?
  1. If you do not receive the on-screen confirmation number, it is possible that your payment did not go through.

  2. You should check to see if your transaction was successful by visiting www.cityofboston.gov/excise (motor vehicles) or www.cityofboston.gov/boats (boats) and entering your registration number again. When you click submit, the next screen will show your payment status as Payment Due, Payment Pending or No Payment Due.

  3. If your transaction was successful, your status should be Payment Pending. This indicates that your payment was successful and is being processed. It may take up to 10 days before it is posted as No Payment Due; this should not cause concern. Your payment date is the date you conducted the online transaction.

  4. If you have attempted a transaction and your status is displayed as Payment Due, your payment was not successful and your credit card has not been charged. You should go through the transaction process again at www.cityofboston.gov/excise (motor vehicles) or www.cityofboston.gov/boats (boats).

I've just attempted a payment and I received an error or rejection message (could not be verified, could not be completed, etc.). Did my payment go through?
  • If you receive any type of error, please take note of the rejection reason and reference number if any. Then, follow step 2 above.

  • You may also receive this error message:
A previous attempt to pay this bill here has failed due to unknown network error. We're presently reviewing the status of your transaction. Please revisit your account here later.

If this message is removed within 48 hours and the status shows Payment Due, then no payment was made - please try again.

If it shows Payment Pending or No Payment Due, then the payment was successful and you're all set.

If you still see this message after 48 hours, please e-mail OnlinePayments@cityofboston.gov to find out more. Include in your email the registration number and whether it was a motor vehicle or boat excise tax payment. Please note that live telephone support is not available.

When I enter my registration number, the payment status is displayed as Payment Due. When I click the "make payment" button, a message says that the bill is in collection. What should I do?
This message means that your tax bill is delinquent and has been sent to Collections. Please call 1-866-432-3713 for payment and other information.

When I enter my registration number and click "make payment" I am told that someone else is attempting to pay for the bill. What does this mean and what should I do?
You or someone else has initiated the payment process from another computer within 30 minutes of your latest attempt. To avoid double payment and double charge, the system does not allow more than one payment to be initiated in a 30 minute time period for an individual bill. To complete a transaction on the bill in question, you should return to the payment page at www.cityofboston.gov/excise (motor vehicles) or www.cityofboston.gov/boats (boats) after 30 minutes has expired.

What information should I provide when contacting TRAC or OnlinePayments Support?

  • Motor vehicle or boat bill?
  • Registration Number
  • Amount of payment
  • Date/Time of attempted payment
  • Reference Number if one was provided

User Tips
  • After making a successful payment, you'll receive the tracking number and email confirmation. Print or save it.

  • Payment posting may take 7-10 days but your payment date is recorded as the date that you conducted the on-line transaction.

  • If you do not receive the payment confirmation, you should take steps to make sure the tax will be paid. This may include following the steps in FAQ #2 above. Failure to follow up may result in non-payment status, interest, fees and possibly a non-renewable car registration.

  • If you prefer to mail the payment, send it to:
    City of Boston
    P.O. Box 55809
    Boston, MA 02205
This address is the same for both motor vehicle and boat bills.
Please write the registration number or the bill number on the check.
