Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 from 8:30 to 9:30 PM
Mayor Thomas M. Menino invites all residents and businesses to participate in Earth Hour to raise awareness about climate change. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm and asks participants to extinguish all non-essential lighting during this one hour. Boston will be among over 7,000 cities and towns world-wide that have pledged to shut off lights for Earth Hour and Mayor Menino asks all residents and business to participate by shutting off all non-essential lighting for Earth Hour.
Earth Hour is a great opportunity for all Boston residents to join city officials and other civic and business leaders in demonstrating how we are working together to reduce the risk of climate change and to showcase your individual contributions to the larger solution.
You can help us spread the word by inviting your friends and neighbors to participate in Earth Hour by sending them an email. Use this opportunity to start a dialogue with your friends and neighbors and discuss why finding a solution to climate change is important to you.
Earth Hour participants are asked to turn off all non-essential lighting for their buildings, especially architectural lighting, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on Saturday, March 23rd 2013. Any lighting that is essential for active use or related to public safety, such as street and emergency lighting, should be kept on. If any lights need to remain on for additional functions within the building, we ask that the shades be drawn if possible.

The City of Boston has been nationally recognized as a leader in environmental and energy policy. Boston is the first major city in the nation to require all large private construction projects adhere to the US Green Building Council’s LEED standards and is the largest municipal purchaser of wind power in New England. For these efforts, Boston was recently named the 3rd Greenest City in North America by Popular Science Magazine and 6th bySustainLane.com. Learn more about the City's climate action work.
