Boston is the first city in the nation to require a green building standard through municipal zoning requirements. By amending Article 37 of the municipal zoning code, the City requires that all large-scale projects meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification standards.
The new station incorporates energy-efficient building systems as well as brand new site utility systems and achieves Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification, a globally recognized green building certification program.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino said that the new assistance under the Greening America's Capitals program will allow Boston to showcase its commitment to sustainability. The major goals of the green design work for City Hall Plaza will be to create well-defined edges and entrances, provide more bike access, connect the plaza to existing streets, increase green elements for better storm water management, and support the energy efficiency and green building improvements taking place in City Hall and other surrounding buildings.

The Center will serve as the base of operations for the joint Audubon Society and Boston Public Schools environmental studies program, and the starting point for the Wildlife Sanctuary's five miles of nature trails throughout the 65-acre Boston Nature Center Site. "This is a building that teaches on a number of levels," said Mayor Menino. "First, it is where more than 3,700 children from our schools come to learn about nature and science. Second, it shows how being environmentally friendly is also cost effective. Third, it reminds all of us that teamwork and determination can accomplish anything."
