Spring 2012 Update
In July 2010, Asian Longhorn Beetles (ALB) were discovered in 6 trees at the Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain. Thanks to the awareness of the grounds crew, the infestation was caught early. Since the onset, more than 70,000 trees have been surveyed and no other ALB damage has been identified.
 
In 2011, the ALB Eradication Progam shared their plans for a three year treatment program in Boston in which all host trees within a 1/4 of the infestation was treated with imidacloprid. The first year of the treatment program was executed in Spring 2011 and the operation when very smoothly. The second year of the treatment program is scheduled to begin on Monday June 4, 2012 with no changes from previous year protocols:
  • Trunk injection of the host trees
  • Active ingredient of Imidaclopid
  • Label rate will be followed
  • Same locations/properties will be asked to participate

Environmental monitoring will also continue throughout 2012. MA ALB Cooperative Eradication Program staff will begin canvassing for participant releases in early May.

Update on Yard Waste Collection in ALB Regulated Area
Leaf and yard waste collected in the Asian Longhorn Beetle (ALB) regulated area can be placed curbside on your trash collection day, where it will be appropriately disposed of in accordance with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) ALB Eradication Program Guidelines. Please place yard waste on the curb by 7AM on your scheduled trash/recycling day. Tie branches with string, 3' maximum length and no wider than 1 inch. Do not put branches in barrels.

Report a Possible ALB Sighting
Tree inspectors from the USDA and DCR will continue with surveys on both public and private property in the Regulated Area to look for signs of ALB. We need you to keep an eye out for possible infestations. Visit the USDA's Beetle Busters for information on how to identify ALB.
