On January 1, 2006 a new Medicare Prescription Drug program went into affect. The new program provided its beneficiaries with a choice of prescription plans that offer various types of prescription coverage.
On Wednesday, November 15, 2006, open enrollment will begin for those who were unable to enroll during the last enrollment cycle and for those who wish to change their Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. However, during this period, please keep in mind that you may be eligible for extra help to pay for the annual deductible, premiums and co-payments related to the new Medicare Prescription Drug Program, which is an average of $2100 in extra help.
In order to apply, you must complete the application and forward it to the Social Security Administration, as soon as possible, or you may complete an online application at https://socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp/. Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed and a follow-up letter will be sent to you to let you know if you qualify for extra help.
Please be sure to complete the Extra Help Application as quickly as possible, as you may quality for this much needed cost saving benefit.
Are you eligible for Prescription Advantage? If you are a Massachusetts resident and you are not a MassHealth or CommonHealth member you might qualify for prescription advantage. If you meet the following description then make sure you sign up for Prescription Advantage.
65 years of age or older, eligible for Medicare, and have a gross household income that is less than 500% of the Federal Poverty Level;
65 years of age or older and not eligible of Medicare; or
Under age 65, work no more than 40 hours per month, meet MassHealth's CommonHealth disability requirements, and have a gross annual income at or below 188% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Things to Remember:
Individuals that qualify for Medicare must also be enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a plan offering creditable coverage and must not have a gross annual household income exceeding 500% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Individuals who receive assistance from MassHealth to pay for Medicare Part A and/or Part B premiums, deductibles and co-payments may still be eligible for Prescription Advantage.
