Boston Named a 2011-2013 Citizen Engaged Community
Created by PTI, the Citizen-Engaged Communities Designation program recognizes excellence in multi-channel contact centers and best practices for the use of Citizen Relationship/Records Management (CRM) systems, 311 services, web portal technology, telephony systems and mobile communications infrastructure. PTI recognized Boston's commitment to citizen engagement and use of new technologies in its engagement programs.

New Urban Mechanics Co-Chairs Win Person of the Year Award
The co‐chairs of a unique IT agency are changing the way citizens interact with cities. Their first initiative, Citizens Connect, is a maintenance‐request app that has been downloaded more than 16,000 times and replicated in more than 20 countries since its 2009 launch. Today, the duo is working with small development firms, nonprofits and colleges, and is managing almost 20 new projects that address needs in infrastructure, education and what they call “participatory urbanism.”

The City of Boston was awarded 8th place in the Center for Digital Government's 2011 Digital Cities Survey. The survey focused on results achieved by cities, via the use of technology, in operating efficiencies and realizing strategic objectives despite current fiscal constraints.

The City of Boston's Technology Department received a 2011 Digital Government Achievement Award for its Legislation Information Management System (LIMS), which streamlines the process of creating, publishing, and accessing information about City Council meetings.

Computerworld 21st Century Achievement Award Winner, 2011: BOSTONavigator
BOSTONavigator has been recognized as a Laureate Award Winner and 21st Century Award Winner. The new BOSTONavigator website is a directory of nearly 750 organizations and over 1,700 opportunities. It helps youth, parents and youth workers find information about out of school time programming including sports, arts, academic support and a variety of other program types. This new effort arms city and community agencies with the technology they need to work together to connect youth with valuable opportunities.

Computerworld Laureate Winner, 2011: Tech Goes Home
Tech Goes Home has been recognized as a Laureate Award Winner in the Training/Education category. The goal of the program is to assist residents to be active users of Internet resources in an effort to improve the quality of their lives. TGH is an innovative program that provides Boston families with 15 hours of training offered in multiple languages, a netbook computer for $50 and assistance in finding low cost connections to the Internet. The focus of the program demonstrates to families how they can use the Internet to Live, Learn, Earn, Work, and Play.

Computerworld Laureate Winner, 2011: Boston EMS AED Alert
Boston EMS AED Alert has been recognized as a Laureate Award Winner in the Health Category. With the goal of improving and increasing bystander CPR and ultimately saving more lives, staff from Boston EMS’ Dispatch Operations as well as RTQI (Research, Training, and Quality Improvement) has implemented an addition to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to show the location of hundreds of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across the city. The improved system, known as AED Alert allows Boston EMS 911 call takers to identify the location of the nearest AED unit once an address is entered. Boston EMS’ RTQI has developed an extensive list of more than 900 AED locations and the database continues to grow.

Harvard University's Bright Ideas in Government Award Winner, 2011: Citizen's Connect App
Citizens Connect is one of 36 government initiatives recognized as a Bright Idea. The smart phone app enables residents and visitors to send issues and reports (such as potholes and graffiti) directly from their mobile devices to the Mayor's 24 Hour Hotline for resolution. This is part of our strategy to enable "anytime, anywhere" service to constituents.

PTI Technology Solutions Award, 2010-2011: Technology Goes Home!
Technology Goes Home provides Boston residents with the opportunity to become engaged in 21st century skill development by providing training, hardware, and assistance with Internet access. The goal of the program is to assist residents to be active users of Internet resources in an effort to improve the quality of their lives. An on-line portal and accompanying 15 hour training program takes participants to resources that will help them to Live, Learn, Earn, Work, and Play on-line as new members of the on-line community.

PTI Technology Solutions Award, 2010-2011: Street & Address Management
The City of Boston, like most other cities of its size, struggles with addressing. Most City departments deal with addresses in some form in their daily business process. Most City departments maintain their own list of addresses which leads to duplication and confusion when locating addresses referred to in multiple ways. SAM (Street and Address Management) was created by the City as a master repository for all addresses in the City. SAM is not just a master address database but also a collection of tools designed to manage and maintain the address data.

Common Cause Distinguished E-Government Award, 2010
Common Cause of Massachusetts released its annual survey findings of municipal websites and presented the City of Boston with a 2010 e-Government Award with Distinction at a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House on March 16, 2010. Awards are given to cities and towns who post their important records online and provide government transparency and foster citizen participation.

The GIS Data Hub was the winner in the Geospatial Information Systems category or Technology Solutions Awards from the Public Technologies Institute. The GIS Data Hub provides a resource for both City employees and residents to access maps, reports and charts using geographic data layers. The self-serve tool on the city's website, offers a more transparent tool for constituents.

The Boston Police Department was the overall Winner in the Public Technologies Institute’s Public Safety category for Text-a-Tip. Citizens can anonymously text-a-tip to the Boston Police from their cell phone. The program was the first in the country and has been very successful.

In the 2008 U.S. Municipalities E-Governance Survey, the City of Boston's web site was rated in the top 10 of all major city sites across the country. The U.S. Municipalities E-Governance Survey assessed the practice of digital governance in large municipalities across the United States by evaluating their websites and ranking them on a national scale.
