NSP - Frequently Asked Questions



I am interested in purchasing a foreclosed property in Boston. Does the City maintain a list of all foreclosed properties that are for sale?

No, the City does not publicize a list of all foreclosed property in Boston. Interested buyers should contact their local realtor for a listing of properties.

If I am planning to purchase a foreclosed property in Boston, can I apply for funding?

Yes. You may be eligible to receive funding through one of the City of Boston’s programs, such as Cash-to-Close LIMITED. You may start by looking up the address of the property you are interested in on our NSP Eligible Property Locator for Homebuyers and Homeowners or by calling the Boston Home Center at 617.635.HOME.

If I decide to purchase a foreclosed property in Boston that needs some work, could I apply for funding to help with the rehab costs?

Yes. You may be eligible to receive funding through one of the City of Boston’s programs, such as Cash-to-Fix. You may start by looking up the address of the property you are interested in on our NSP Eligible Property Locator for Homebuyers and Homeowners or by calling the Boston Home Center at 617.635.HOME.

Can I get both downpayment assistance and rehab funding for a foreclosed property?

Yes. You may be eligible for both financial assistance and rehab funding, provided the property is located in an NSP eligible area and you meet all the terms of the programs. You may start by looking up the address of the property you are interested in on our NSP Eligible Property Locator for Homebuyers and Homeowners or by calling the Boston Home Center at 617.635.HOME.

Is there an income limit for NSP funding?

Yes. Eligible homebuyers or homeowners must have a household income that does not exceed 120% of Area Median Income (AMI) as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). View HUD Income Eligibility Requirements.

Do I have to be a first-time homebuyer to qualify for NSP funding?


No. But you may not currently own any other property in the City of Boston or elsewhere at the time of purchase.

Do I have to be a current Boston resident to access NSP funds for my property?

No.

I currently own a property in Boston. Can I still qualify for NSP funds for a new property that I plan to purchase?

No.

I may owe money to the City of Boston for unpaid tax bills or other small fees. Does this affect my eligibility for funding?

Eligible participants of any financial assistance program offered by the Department of Neighborhood Development’s Boston Home Center must be current in all owed payments to the City.
