What You Can Do

Many residents of Boston are making their homes more efficient, or walking more and driving less, and many local businesses and institutions are making substantial efforts to reduce energy use-and the City is providing resources to help them. In April 2007, Mayor Menino gave Boston's first Green Awards to twelve business and five residents who had gone above and beyond in their attempts to use green technologies and sustainable practices in their businesses and communities. To further focus the many efforts underway in Boston, the Mayor will establish a Community Climate Action Task Force to set goals and recommend actions for community-wide GHG reductions.

    Learn about climate change

Earth's climate is always changing. Recently, however, many regions have shown unusual patterns of higher temperature and of wetter or drier conditions. Globally, the ten warmest years in the last century have all occurred in the last twelve years. The evidence points to several causes, including the increasing production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by the burning of oil, coal, and other fossil fuels, the conversion of forest to farms and other uses, and a wide range of other human activities.  These greenhouse gases are turning the atmopshere into a warmer and warmer blanket. Unabated, these trends could lead to climate change within this century that would be mroe radical that at any time in the last several hundred thousand years.
