2010 Census

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census will help communities receive billions of dollars in federal funds each year. The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats our state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

    U.S. Census Bureau Announces 2010 Census Population & Apportionment Counts

    The U.S. Census Bureau announces the 2010 U.S. Census resident population count, which showed the resident population of the United States on April 1, 2010. Apportionment totals were also calculated, and released to divide the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, among the states.

    Latest 2010 Census Participation Rate Information

    The latest 2010 Census participation numbers have been recently released. As of late, the national participation rate is reporting 74% of its residents have participated which has exceeded the 67% national participation rate in the 2000 Census. The City of Boston's latest participation rate is 64%, and so far the top two highest participation rates in the City have been in the Bellevue Hill section of West Roxbury, and the Jamiaca Pond/Hills area of Jamaica Plain, both at 79% particpation rate. The lowest reported rate in the City is the Grove Hall section of Dorchester at 46%.

  • Mayor Menino Announces Boston Population Continues to Grow

    According to 2010 Census numbers released today, the City of Boston population is 617,594 residents, a 4.8% increase over the 2000 census or 28,453 people.  This marks the first time since the 1970s that Boston’s population exceeded 600,000. “I am proud to see Boston’s population continue to grow,” Mayor Menino said. "I am confident Boston will continue to grow and thrive."
