WriteBoston works successfully with administration, teachers, and
students in some of Boston's most exciting high schools. WriteBoston
Program Areas range from in-school writing support with teachers to the
facilitation of dynamic poetry slams to the creation of engaging after
school activities infused with writing.
WriteBoston Program Areas include:
- Writing Coach - WriteBoston currently provides a part time writing coach in seven small high
schools in Boston - Boston Community Leadership Academy, the Brook Farm Business and Service Career Academy,
the Community Academy of Science and Health, the Media Communications Technology High School, Monument High School,
the Parkway Academy of Technology and Health, and the Urban Science Academy.
- Professional development - WriteBoston provides professional development for electronic pen pal
programs, writing across the curriculum, MCAS/academic writing preparation, looking at student
work, and developing authentic writing experiences.
- Data analysis and implementation - WriteBoston writing coaches develop school-wide writing
assessments and collect data on writing proficiency. Key areas of intervention are determined
to improve writing instruction.
- Author visits - Working with PEN New England, the Boston Globe, and other writing organizations,
WriteBoston recruits celebrated authors who present engaging talks of the writing process,
facilitate book discussions, or analyze student writing in workshops.
- Writing events - WriteBoston sponsors writing events to both celebrate writing and encourage
student involvement in writing activities. Such writing events include poetry slams, literary
magazine distributions and celebrations, or essay contests.
- Publishing student writing - A new citywide teen newspaper, T.i.P., Boston Teens in Print, was
developed in May 2004 with support from the Boston Globe Foundation, and publishes student work
quarterly. WriteBoston connects young writers with various publishing opportunities, including
print newspapers, community newsletters, online forums, and magazines.
- Volunteers/mentors from local colleges, universities, business and community organizations -
WriteBoston recruits volunteers from the business and higher education community to become guest
speakers, serve as pen pals for the e-pal program, and become writing mentors who provide students
with individual support and an audience for their writing.
- Business internships - In memory of author/journalist Caroline Knapp, WriteBoston administers
summer internships at area newspapers. Students improve writing skills and gain valuable
experience in the workforce.
- Out-of-school writing intervention - WriteBoston offers a Summer Journalism Institute and helps
participating schools enhance existing after-school programs and develop programs focusing on
writing.
