The Streets / Salem Street
Salem Street, one of Bostons oldest and narrowest streets, is a prime candidate for design innovation to accomodate the needs of both pedestrians and vehicles. The curbless option (shown at right) could enhance street character and mobility by increasing flexibility and erasing the existing seams between different modes of transport.
The re-design establishes an 18’ roadway, with one travel lane and one lane for parking. Bollards and/or aesthetic paving materal would delineate sidewalks on each side, though pedestrians, such as large groups following the Freedom Trail, could comfortably encroach on the roadway. Unique street pavings and raised intersections also contribute to keeping Salem Street’s light auto traffic calm.
