BRA Owned Real Estate Process for Disposition
Definitions of Terms

Process for the Disposition of Abutter/Unbuildable Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA)-owned Parcels
The following will take place when interest is shown in BRA -owned property:
  • The BRA will determine if the parcel is buildable or non-buildable
The following applies if a parcel is determined to be buildable:
  • If a parcel is determined to be buildable, the Community Development and Housing department will contact the abutter that originated the letter of inquiry to notify him or her that the BRA will bid the property for housing and may proceed with a Request for Proposals (RFP) process. For further information, see BRA process for disposition of BRA-owned parcels for housing.
The following applies if a parcel is determined to be non-buildable:
  • If the parcel is determined to be non-buildable the first step of the process is for abutters to submit a letter expressing interest in the parcel(s) along with a brief description and time line of what they propose to do with the property.
  • If we do not receive a written response postmarked by a specified date it will be determined that the abutters have no interest in the parcel and understand it may be conveyed to another direct abutter.
  • If more than one abutter expresses interest, abutters will be offered an opportunity to propose a mutually agreeable division of the parcel.
  • The Asset Management team will notify abutters about the proposed decision.
  • The BRA Board will review and approve or modify the recommendation via a vote on designation of the parcel.
