Mission
The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to maintain clean, green, safe, accessible and well-programmed park land for the City's residents.

Performance Report

Performance Highlights
  • The percent of Parks Maintenance requests completed surpassed the target in FY09 by a significant margin. With the introduction of an electronic constituent relationship management system this past year, Parks & Recreation has placed an even greater focus on closing out service requests in a timely manner.
  • Tree Pruning numbers are up in part due to the first year of a new pilot program that focuses on pruning all trees in a neighborhood in a single year. This is a pilot of a citywide cyclical zone pruning program, which aims over the long term to have every neighborhood in the city on a pro-active pruning schedule. By focusing each year on specific zones, this pruning strategy is generally more efficient since the time and cost associated with travel across the city is reduced; moreover, the health of the trees are generally improved as issues can be caught by trained arborists sooner.
  • The Parks & Recreation Department continues to strengthen its ties with community partners, as a central strategy for increasing park activity and improving park landscapes. Parks & Recreation hit its projected target for Park partnerships and topped its target for projected revenue.

Description of Services
The Department is responsible for 217 City parks, playgrounds and athletic fields, 65 squares, 17 fountains, 75 game courts, 16 historic and 3 active cemeteries, urban wilds, 4 High School Athletic Fields, and approximately 125,000 trees, all covering 2346 acres, 1,000 of which comprise the historic Emerald Necklace. In addition, the Parks Dept. is responsible for more than 35,000 street trees. The department annually beautifies these park and open space areas with ornamental plantings of trees, shrubs, and flowers. The department schedules events and programs for the participation and enjoyment of the public.

Boston Maps GIS Data Hub
The GIS Data Hub provides residents and researchers with easier access to a host of useful information. Through this application, residents can see what service issues neighbors have reported in their community; mapmakers can download GIS layers; and anyone can browse through and print out maps from the City's map gallery. Launched with a core set of frequently requested information, the City's MIS Department plans to use this application as a foundation for additional maps and data sets over time.
