Mission
The mission of Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) is to enhance the quality of life for Boston residents by partnering with community center councils, agencies and businesses to support children, youth, individuals and families. BCYF accomplishes its mission through a wide range of comprehensive programs and services according to neighborhood needs.

Performance Report

Performance Highlights
  • As the result of both seasonal trends and increased community outreach, Community Center visits were up by 6.5 percent (or by 44,688 visits) in Q4 versus Q3. As BCYF ramps up for summer, there is a general increase in pool visits due to the warm weather, but the department's marketing efforts also expand in order to promote summer camps and other events that fall under the Boston Recreational Opportunities for City KidS (or R.O.C.K.S!!!) summer initiative. These increased efforts, in part, lead to an increase in Community Center visits.
  • BCYF has been focused on maximizing the impact of youth development and resource events by increasing the number and variety of opportunities, but convening smaller groups of participants. With these smaller groups of youth and families, BCYF has experienced a greater chance of influencing behaviors, teaching life skills and creating positive development opportunities.
  • Citywide youth development activities more than doubled in Q4 compared to Q3, with a corresponding increase in participants of 25 percent. As noted last quarter and continuing to trend upward, one of the central components of BCYF's Streetworker program is connecting youth with positive youth development opportunities. Youth development activities include but are not limited to skate nights, baseball games, resume writing workshops, and teen dances. With the onset of warm weather, and the increased presence of Streetworkers in targeted neighborhoods, BCYF has been able to connect more youth with these types of opportunities that promote positive behaviors and choices.
  • BCYF's Streetworker program continued to increase the number of youth reached (up 9 percent in Q4 vs. Q3) and the number of youth and families referred for services (up 43 percent in Q4 vs. Q3). In the coming months of FY10, BCYF expects to see these outreach and referral levels continue to increase as the new cohort of Streetworkers hired in the spring forge new relationships in their targeted communities.

Boston Maps GIS Data Hub
The GIS Data Hub provides residents and researchers with easier access to a host of useful information. Through this application, residents can see what service issues neighbors have reported in their community; mapmakers can download GIS layers; and anyone can browse through and print out maps from the City's map gallery. Launched with a core set of frequently requested information, the City's MIS Department plans to use this application as a foundation for additional maps and data sets over time.
