Human Resources Unit of the City of Boston Assessing Department

The Assessing Department of the City of Boston comprises approximately ninety employees. The majority of these employees are in positions classified as assessing, clerical, research, technical services and management.

The core occupational group in the department is the assessor career path. The entry level title for this series is Assistant Assessor Trainee I (starting salary $540.31 per week). This position does not require experience in real estate appraisal, but such experience is helpful. Good communication, math and computer skills are desirable qualifications, and a background in accounting, data collection or fieldwork would be relevant. On the average, we hire several trainees per year.

The next title in the assessor series is Assistant Assessor Trainee II (starting salary $607.76). This position requires at least six months experience in real estate appraisal, as well as an understanding of valuation methodology. The third title is Assistant Assessor (starting salary $769.503), for which at least three years appraisal experience is required. Assistant Assessors must have knowledge of both commercial and residential real estate appraisal, as well as professional level skills in writing, math and software.

Openings for the higher-level assessor positions are generally filled via promotion. However, external candidates with appropriate skills and experience are encouraged to apply.

Other openings generally occur less frequently. Such positions include clerical job titles, of which the most commonly posted is Head Clerk (starting salary $540.19). In addition, there are occasional openings in research; generally these require advanced technical skills and at least a bachelor's degree.
