Today, the city's many temples and palaces, and some of its older residential areas, still look much as they did in past centuries and provide an ongoing source of inspiration for artists.

This exhibition showcases prints of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries that depict the cityscapes, history, legends, and festivals of the traditional center of Japanese culture."

Mrs Gardner & Asia at the Isabelle Stewart Gardner Museum.

"Journeys East considers Isabella Gardner's continuing dialogue with Asia, from her trips to the Near and Far East, to the formation of a personal museum where Asian art played a significant role. Later in life, her close friendship with Okakura Kakuzo initiated a new phase of collecting Asian art and led to a rearrangement of the museum.

Jul 30 - Aug 11, 2009: Boston Red Sox US- Japanese Youth Baseball Exchange
Presented by FUNAI ELECTRIC

In 2009, the Red Sox Foundation, the official 501c3 team charity of the Boston Red Sox, and electronics giant Funai Electric brought 12 Japanese Junior High School youths to Boston from Kyoto, Boston's sister city, and Chiba, home of Chiba Lotte Marines led by former NY Mets manager Bobby Valentine. The goal of Funai's Red Sox US-Japan Youth Baseball Exchange program is to promote greater cultural understanding between youngsters from both countries through their shared love of the game of baseball. Following the 10 day exchange, reports from both sides of the Globe deemed it an extraordinary success!

Building on last year's achievement, the Red Sox Foundation is this summer bringing twelve Junior High School boys from Boston to Japan for the second half of the Funai's Red Sox US-Japan Youth Baseball Exchange program. The Boston youngsters will travel to Japan in late July through early August and will be accompanied by Red Sox Foundation staff members, who will serve as coaches and chaperones for the group.

In Japan, the 12 day program will include baseball clinics and games with young Japanese teams of the same age, and the opportunity to explore a variety of cultural and educational activities that will help promote greater understanding between Japan and the United States and encourage a greater appreciation of each other's traditions, history and customs. Just as the Japanese boys stayed with Boston host families last summer, this summer the Boston boys will spend some time with Japanese host families in Kyoto and Chiba, a suburb of Tokyo.

Participants in the Exchange program were selected not only on their baseball skills but their demonstrated interest in exploring other cultures. As a result, we have selected young Americans who are not only interested in the international sport of baseball, but are also outgoing, curious about the world, respectful of others, and have demonstrated leadership capacity and value the opportunity to foster international friendships."

As was proven last year, this cultural exchange can be a life changing experience in all who have a role in the exchange -- whether its the boys who are participating or the Japanese and American families who host them. For more information about this unique exchange program, which is sponsored by Funai and organized by the Red Sox Foundation in association with the Japan Society of Boston, please visit www.redsoxfoundation.org. You can also see a video of last years program on YOU TUBE keywords " Red Sox Foundation" and "japan exchange"
