Records in the City Archives
Significant record holdings in the City Archives include:
- Annexed towns of Brighton, Charlestown, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Roxbury, and West Roxbury, 1804-1911.
- Assessing: valuation of real and personal property, 1822-1911.
- Auditing: contracts, 1923-1967, and bills & receipts, 1805-1870.
- City Clerk: business registrations, declarations of trust, 1907-1993, and deeds, 1825-1911.
- City Council: Aldermen and Common Council, 1822-1909; City Council 1909-1987: minutes and docket documents, 1822-1987.
- Election: voter registration lists (including 19th century naturalized voter lists), 1857-1940.
- Inspectional Services: use & occupancy permits, demolished building records, flammables licensing, building, health, and zoning code enforcement, 1871-1992.
- Institutions: including the records of the house of industry and almshouse, the house of correction and other institutions, 1853-1980.
- Mayor: records of Mayor Raymond Flynn, 1984-1993, and a small selection from Mayor White's administration 1968-1993. Also, prior to 1909 the Mayor was chairman of the Board of Aldermen, so that mayoral actions from 1822 to 1909 are largely documented in the Aldermen minutes and dockets.
- School: School Committee minutes and administrative records, 1845-1996; also student records of closed schools.
- Treasury: tax collection, loans, and disbursement, 1822-1988.
