			<abstract label="Abstract:">The Department of Statistics was the department of the Boston Public Schools responsible for the collection of data and production of reports pertaining to Pupils, Teachers, Departments, and Adult Education; maintaining a street directory and boundary lines of school districts; and maintaining a list of vacant seats at each school.  It also produced statistics for the state and federal governent required by the Massachusetts Racial Imbalance Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.</abstract>

			<head>Agency History</head>
			<p>The Department of Statistics was the department of the Boston Public Schools responsible for the collection of data and statistics. They identify 5 areas of responsibility.  The production of the Annual Statistical Document which contains pupil enrollment and attendance statistics, number and type of teachers and administrators, statistics on department providing services to students such as guidance and health services, and Adult Education Statistics.  The department produced Statistical Studies identifying students by race by school and grade as well as submissions to the the federal and state governments as mandated by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Massachusetts Racial Imbalance Act.  The Department of Statistics maintained a street directory and the school district boundary lines.  Finally, they maintained monthly statistics on vacant seats or "Open Enrollment" titled "Available Pupil Stations".  The Department provided statistical information to the school department, individuals, the media, and agencies inside and outside Boston.</p>

			<head>Scope and Content</head>
			<p>The Department of Statistics Collection is 2 cubic feet contains files from 1967 to 1973 pertaining to Boston Public Schools students and teachers.  The original arrangement of the collection has been maintained, they are arranged in reverse chronological order by school year.  Each years files contain statistics gathered through questionaires and surveys as well as the questionaires and surveys themselves.  A large portion of these statistics were used for the annual statistics report and include information on students race and gender by grade level and school.  Also included are similar statistics submitted to the federal government under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Massachusetts Racial imbalance Law; statistics related to Special Education and Vocational Education; and Enrollment.  Prior to 1968 no statistics were kept concerning race.</p>
