Make a Difference for the Animals and Become a Volunteer!

If you have spare time and would like to help animals, we have a volunteer opportunity for you! We are committed to providing each volunteer with a rewarding experience. To become a volunteer at our shelter, you will need to fill out a volunteer application and then come in for an orientation. Volunteers are needed daily! As a volunteer you will enjoy caring for homeless pets and getting them ready for their new homes. You will be walking, socializing and caring for dogs, cats and some small animals.

Application Process

When will I be contacted?: Applicants are contacted shortly after submitting the application if we feel they may be a good volunteer candidate.

What is the minimum age requirement?: You must be at least 16 years of age. A youth release form must be signed by your parent/guardian if you are under the age of 18. A parent/guardian must come to the initial meeting with the shelter manager.

What do volunteers do?

Socialize and exercise animals
Grooming and bathing
Adoption counseling
Administrative assistance (for example, making adoption packets)
Cleaning (when necessary) and laundry
Feed and water animals when necessary

What is the next step?: An interview and tour will be scheduled.

What are your hours?: Monday-Saturday: 8AM-4PM and Tuesdays until 8:00PM.

What hours do you need volunteers?: Monday-Saturday: 9:30AM - 4:00PM and Tuesdays until 8:00PM.

About the Shelter

Are you a no-kill shelter?: No, a no-kill shelter has a closed-door policy. We accept all animals that come from the City of Boston. Not all animals are suitable for adoption. We house dangerous animals that will not go up for adoption. We also quarantine animals here after bite incidents. Animals that show any sign of aggression are not suitable for adoption. A behavioral evaluation is performed on all friendly animals. We do our very best to adopt out good pets or have them transferred to other shelters. However, euthanasia is sometimes a necessity.
