Mayor's Youth Council Meeting Notes

June 12, 2012

This meeting featured special guests from the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club who did some free-style rapping for us. They are going to be in a concert along with other upcoming, locally famous rappers. We also went back to the discussion of outreaching, and reviewed exactly what we think it means. We spent a good amount of time learning as much as possible about outreaching because it will be the base of our effectiveness and will ultimately decide how well our ideas reverberate around Boston. Between our last meeting and this meeting, we took an online survey regarding our placement in the different subcommittees. The three options for subcommittees include Youth Outreach, Health, and Public Safety. Having subcommittees gives us the ability to tackle different issues that we feel strongly about. Finally, Dorchester Representative and Coordinator of the Public Safety Subcommittee, Rasheed Walters closed out the meeting with a presentation outlining the "Art of Networking."

At this meeting we went over what an elevator pitch is and we all presented our own versions of an MYC elevator pitch. This is always going to be one of the most important steps in outreaching. We learned what outreaching is in terms of the MYC. Outreaching is the spreading of information to and getting information from youth in our neighborhoods to spot and combat teen issues. We created skits with realistic scenarios that are likely to occur when outreaching and worked on figuring out how to handle them. Finally, we revamped the MYC commitment sheet that was used last year and changed it to make our effectiveness as Youth Council Representatives even better!
