The City of Boston, in partnership with the Northeastern University and Boston Bar Association sponsor the Mayor’s Youth Council program to give Boston young people an active role in addressing youth issues. Each spring 36 young people are selected to represent their neighborhoods as volunteers on a citywide board. The council meets approximately twice a month to participate in skill building workshops and to work on issues that they have prioritized. On a neighborhood basis, each area has two representatives who outreach in their area to share resource information and listen to peers. The Youth Council meets with Mayor Thomas Menino and City Officials on a regular basis to discuss youth concerns and positive solutions. Northeastern University sponsors teamwork activities and field trips. Volunteers from the Boston Bar Association work with the council members to assist with outreach, planning agendas, and building effective coalitions. By involving young people in government the City of Boston hopes to develop better communication on existing opportunities and listen to suggestions on what the City can do to improve its youth oriented efforts.
