Environmental Review/Impact
Assessment Process
The Environment Department's Environmental Reviewer evaluates development, infrastructure and transportation projects;
proposed regulatory changes; and permitting applications. Reviews are conducted pursuant to the Massachusetts Environmental
Policy Act (MEPA); Article 80 of the Boston Zoning Code; MGL Chapter 91, administered by the Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection; the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); and other regulatory processes. The department
analyzes projects for potential environmental impacts on the City of Boston and its residents. The reviews identify specific
environmental impacts and the department suggests potential solutions.
Assessment Process
Projects reviewed include:
- local industrial, commercial, mixed use and residential developments or redevelopments;
- local and regional transit and transportation projects; and
- new or amended local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
