Mayor Menino Kicks Off July's Healthy Main Streets Initiative
On July 7, 2008, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Department of Neighborhood Development Director Evelyn Friedman, Boston Public Health Commissioner Barbara Ferrer, and MBTA General Manager Dan Grabauskas kicked off a month-long Boston Main Streets initiative called Healthy Main Streets, designed to encourage residents to get out to their local commercial district on foot, bicycle, or by riding the "T".  A three-way partnership between Boston Main Streets, Boston Public Health Commission, and the MBTA, Healthy Main Streets is a family-friendly program that includes a "Where’s Charlie?" scavenger hunt throughout seven Main Streets districts and is designed to promote increased health and physical fitness throughout Boston’s neighborhoods. Residents will be challenged to find the cut-out of "Charlie" (hidden in various establishments over the four weeks) to win a summer fitness prize pack including a pair of New Balance sneakers and an MBTA pass.
